Barbour’s Steve McQueen Collection – Highlights

Posted by // November 7th, 2012 // Fashion No Comments »

Known for his acting ability and natural cool, Steve McQueen was an avid motorcycle racer and participated in the 1964 International Six Day Trials event in East Germany representing the United States.

During this event McQueen wore the Barbour International jacket. It is believed that as the U.S. team was travelling through London, the riders decided to purchase Barbour International jackets to protect them from the challenging terrain and difficult conditions. Barbour was already worn by the many trial bikers and this decision only helped to build the brand’s popularity.

McQueen was able to utilise this passion for motorcycles by performing many of his own stunts in movies. In one of his most memorable roles, as Captain Virgil Hilts in The Great Escape, his character was involved in a motorcycle chase riding a Triumph TR6 Trophy.

Barbour originally launched the Steve McQueen Collection to celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the International motorcycle jacket. The collection highlights the original union between the iconic actor and the historic English brand and is now into its second season. The most recent season takes inspiration from the Californian deserts that McQueen was so fond of riding across. Many of the items use natural colours such as olive and sandstone.

Below are some of our favourite items from season two.

Baker Jacket
The Baker Jacket is available in olive or sandstone and is made of eight ounce heavyweight wax. Inspired by the original A7 jacket, its deep pockets and belt give it the classic Barbour feel. The International Six Day Trial American team badge completes the look.

Alfalfa Stripe Shirt / Alfalfa Shirt
Both shirts feature needlecord and western styling. With mother of pearl snap buttons and two pocket chests, the shirts are versatile enough to be worn in a range of social situations.

Slate Button Through Jacket and Bullit Canvas Holdall
A jacket inspired by the sport of baseball, it comes in merlot, racing green and navy. The top button features the U.S. flag adding an extra touch of detail. The Bullit holdall bag is constructed from heavy washed canvas with a leather trim. Perfect for weekends away.
